STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The goal of this project is to collect student survey data on the use of an original practice called Genetics of the Day (GOTD) as an active learning strategy in lecture sections of BIO 205 Genetics. Although lecturing is an efficient way of conveying information, it is limited by the attention span of students. In Genetics, I have observed that most students have trouble concentrating after 20-30 minutes of lecture, and this is consistent with observations by my colleagues and the educational literature. I had been using occasional active learning strategies for years in Genetics, and decided in 2016 to use at least one of them during every lecture period. I formalized the practice as GOTD, and began to accumulate a variety of activities that I could use in class. The activities took the form of Genetics Discussions of the Day, Genetics Questions of the Day, Genetics Problems of the Day, and Genetics Activities of the Day. With this survey, I intend to learn general information about how my fall 2021 and spring 2022 Genetic students view GOTD, whether or not they think it is a valuable use of our class time, and what suggestions they have for improving it.

STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

During the last week of the fall 2021 and spring 2021 semesters, I will administer a survey about GOTD. The survey includes a statement that taking it constitutes informed consent to participate in the study and that students can choose not to answer any of the questions. The survey does not ask for the names of students and will not affect grades. It uses a Likert scale for opinion questions and includes several open-ended questions. The data will be collected and analyzed for the purpose of improving GOTD and for presenting information to others about it as an active learning strategy.

ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITS

There are no anticipated risks to the students of the survey. The benefits to students include feeling empowerment over their own educations and feeling a sense of accomplishment for contributing to the improvement of genetics education.

SUBJECT SELECTION

All students enrolled in BIO 205 in the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters will be surveyed (approximately 30 students each semester).

CONFIDENTIALITY

No student identifying information will be collected. Any published or presented data resulting from this study will therefore not identify individual students but instead will report aggregate class data.
