STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of student-athletes' perceptions of their interactions with faculty. The information will be used to provide a better overall student-athlete academic experience and to help educate faculty on the way they may be perceived by student-athletes on their campus.

STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Participants will be asked to participate in the survey; filling out the survey will be there acknowledgement of consent. Paper surveys will be distributed to participants. Demographic data will be collected. Students will complete the survey in approximately 10-15 minutes. Descriptive statistics will primarily be used. Other analyses may also be used to compare the data between certain demographics.

ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITS

This study will not place the participants at any more risk than they would normally encounter in everyday life. No compensation is given in any form and no personal benefit gained for participation.

SUBJECT SELECTION

Students who are a member of one of Missouri Westerns 16 intercollegiate athletic teams will be asked to participate. The coordination of student-athlete recruitment will be done through their athletic coaches.

CONFIDENTIALITY

There will be no identifiers connecting surveys back to participants. Surveys will be stored in a locked file cabinet in a locked office.

I would like to make one major change and two minor changes to proposal 3314. Because the athletic coaches will be helping in the recruitment process of their student-athletes, a Participation Consent Form has been added to the front page of the survey instrument. The consent form will inform students of the purpose of the study, why they are being asked to participate, what will be asked of them, what risks are expected, how their information will be protected, who will benefit from the study, whom to contact with any questions and that their participation is voluntary. The final statement on the consent form will read, Completion of this survey indicates your willingness to participate in this project and that are at least 18 years of age. Two small changes were made to the survey instrument. An additional question was asked to distinguish whether students transferred from a two-year or four-year institution. Second, the wording was changed from core to general studies in the Faculty/Class Description section under Part B to better align with the verbiage commonly used on Missouri Westerns campus.

Under Part A: General Academic, two questions were modified to be inclusive of Zoom environment. Modified Statement: I go to professors’ office hours (i.e., face-to-face or online).
