STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to explore how the career decision-making self-efficacy and emotional intelligence of graduate students changes over their course of graduate school. The correlations between these variables and job satisfaction, professional involvement, and academic performance will be explored. The goals of the study are to be able to provide discussion and explanation of how graduate programs are or are not impacting career decision-making self-efficacy.

STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Participants will be sent an email from the researcher at their respective institutions. Participants will be asked to click on a link sent via email where they will read the informed consent form. Then, they will proceed to the survey. They will be asked to participate three times throughout their tenure as graduate students - the first month of classes, the end of their first year, and the end of their second year. The survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes each time. The survey and consent form are attached.

ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITS

The research presents no more than minimal risk and involves no activities or procedures for which written consent is normally required.

SUBJECT SELECTION

This study will be sent to graduate students in the School of Kinesiology and Recreation at Illinois State University, Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management at Texas Tech University, and the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Missouri Western University who are 18 years of age or older and enrolled in a program within these respective departments. Data will be collected starting in the Fall of 2019 and will be collected on cohorts starting in the falls of 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. The number of subjects will depend on enrollment over the course of the study at respective graduate programs. Currently, the Sport and Fitness Masters Program at MWSU welcomes approximately 10-15 new graduate students each year.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Data will be collected using an anonymous survey link and the option in Qualtrics to not collect IP addresses or any identifiable information will be checked. While students will create a code so that their surveys can be linked to one another, this code will not be something that can be linked directly to a specific student.
