STATEMENT OF PURPOSEThe purpose of this study is to understand college students' attitudes toward people with mental illness in the USA.
STATEMENT OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGYThis is an international study. Dr. Yeh will collect the Nursing College students in the USA. Another research team will collect Nursing College students in the Australia. This is a descriptive cross-sectional research design. The questionnaires will be used to do the data collection. After the IRB approved, nursing students in the second, third and fourth semesters will be invited to fill out the questionnaires. The researcher will explain this study before they fill out the questionnaires. If they agree to participate, they will be asked to fill out the questionnaires. Their responses to the survey are completely confidential and voluntary. It will take 20-30 minutes to complete this study in the classroom. After they complete the questionnaires and return to the researcher, the students will receive small gifts. The following questionnaires will be used to do the data collection: 1.Social Distance Scale (SDS), 2. Mental Health Clinical Confidence Scale (MHCC), 3. Mental Health Clinical Placement Survey (MHCP), 4. Assessing Emotions (AE), and 5. Therapeutic Relationship Scale (TR).
ANTICIPATED RISKS AND BENEFITSThis study will use students 20-30 minutes. They filling out the survey are voluntary and they can stop at any time. If students choose not to participate in the study, there is no impact on their grades and study. Therefore, the risk is very low. The benefits are they will reflect how they interact with people with mental illness and they will receive a small gift after they complete the survey.
SUBJECT SELECTIONAfter the IRB approved, nursing students in the second, third and fourth semesters will be invited to fill out the questionnaires. The total number of participants is about 150 from School of Nursing and Health Professions.
CONFIDENTIALITY1. The questionnaires will be put in a locked closet at the office of the principal investigator. 2. No name on the questionnaire. The data will be aggregated, so the research subjects will not be identified in the research results. 3. The questionnaires will be shredded and the data file will be deleted after six years of completing this study.
